Founded in 2009, the Calcutta Classical Guitar Society is a membership-based, not-for-profit society registered under the laws of West Bengal, India, dedicated to promoting the Charter
Objects including the interests and aspirations of classical guitar professionals, students, teachers and guitar-music lovers of India. The Society hosted the inaugural Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival & Competition ‘Nikita Koshkin’. when for the first time in India internationally acclaimed class guitar maestros from 16 countries performed and taught participants from over 25 countries. Buoyed by the success of the Festival, the Society widened its role and has become an active promoter of many genres of music. The Society is trying to bring live music to people at all levels of society through series of concerts in diverse environments and the pioneering work of the Society is reflected in Live In Concert, Live In India, Live In School, Live In Park and Live In Youth. The Society is also active in bringing international level classical guitar training to India and has already held the Johannes Möller Guitar Camp 2011 in March 2011 and the Summer Academy 2011 with Denis Azabagic and Eugenia Moliner in July 2011. In December 2011, the Society again hosted the Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival 2011 when 40 internationally acclaimed musicians performed more than a dozen concerts and gave master classes.

The Society was inaugurated by the iconic classical musician and composer Abraham Mazumder at a glittering event at Hastings Hall, Hastings Chamber on 23rd December, 2009. Many musicians and local as well as expatriate music lovers were present. Foreign cultural agencies of the city also attended.

At the same event, the Society’s Website was inaugurated by Tim Grandage, founder of renowned charity Future
Hope. and the Society’s Library, perhaps the only library in India solely dedicated to classical guitar books, sheet music, CDs, DVDs, etc. was dedicated to guitarists of India. This was followed by solo and ensemble classical guitar recitals by teachers and students, which was received with thunderous applause.
